The demand for cosmetologists is so high, there’s near zero unemployment in the salon business. According to the National Accrediting Commission of Cosmetology Arts and Sciences, the salon industry in Kansas—and throughout the nation— is a job-seeker’s dream. The majority of American salon owners report they have job openings right now.
When you choose cosmetology or esthetics, not only can you make upward of $50,000 working in a salon or spa, dozens of cool career paths are open to you. Just a few include editorial or runway stylist, hairstylist for movies or television, platform artist, image consultant, spa manger, skin care specialist, makeup artist, manufacturer’s educator and paramedical esthetician.

But it’s not just about the money and the glitz. A job “happiness index” survey conducted by London’s City and Guilds found that hairdressers are the second happiest among all trade professionals—and that trade professionals are significantly happier than white-collar workers. Working cosmetologists surveyed said their artistic, hands-on work makes them feel valued, appreciated and happy most of the time. Now that’s cause for career celebration!
